Danube River Cruises
Sail down the
River Danube and admire the subtle changes in the passing scenery
from the comfort of an intimate river cruise ship. Our
Danube river cruises use ships that have been
specially designed for cruising the most famous rivers in the world
and with amenities such as panorama lounges and large sun decks,
you will never have to miss a moment of sightseeing. On the banks
of the River Danube lie majestic and historic cities such as
Vienna, Budapest and Bratislava as well as picturesque towns and
villages like Passau, Melk and Krems. Each place has its own
individual style and history, offering visitors a unique
experience.
The four and five star ships used on our Danube river cruises are much more intimate than large cruise liners, they typically carry between 50 and 200 guests due to being custom built for river cruising. The ships have been designed with guests' comfort in mind and feature a range of excellent amenities, making them feel more like floating hotels rather than river cruise ships. The meals on board are also of a great standard and vary from buffets at breakfast time to elegant multiple-course dinners. Guests are free to relax on the sun deck, in the lounge or at the bar and depending on the ship used there may be a selection of other facilities, such as fitness rooms and outdoor whirlpools.
What a civilised way to visit the magnificent cities of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. We join our luxurious ship for a gentle cruise along the queen of Europe's rivers. Our journey passes the dynamic capitals of Vienna and Budapest and through the scenic Wachau Valley.

The popular sailing route of the scenic River Danube
provides a remarkable look at some of the countries of central
Europe, offering insight into their history and culture. These
Danube river cruises stop up to three times a day
as they sail along the river giving guests plenty of opportunities
to disembark the ship and explore areas independently or with shore
excursions. Some itineraries have shore excursions included in the
tour whereas others may not, leaving you even more time to explore
independently. The Danube has a long bicycle trail along its banks
where you can enjoy the fresh river air, the lush vegetation and
the picturesque towns and cities that line the river at your own
pace.
When meandering down the River Danube it is easy to see why it is one of the most popular river cruise destinations in the world. With medieval castles overlooking the river, majestic buildings dotted amongst the landscape and incredible flora and fauna lining the riverbanks, our Danube river cruises offer many remarkable sights. From the magnificent Opera House in Vienna to the UNESCO world heritage listed Castle District in Budapest, there are so many fascinating places to experience in central Europe. As well as the incredible sights, our Danube river cruises provide guests with a relaxing holiday upon well-equipped and comfortable ships at times of the year when the River Danube, and the places beside it, are at their most beautiful.
These Danube river cruises include many of the advantages that make every Great Rail Journeys holiday exceptional, such as the services of a professional Tour Manager and the peace of mind that everything is taken care of before you leave your home. The rail journeys are a pleasure in themselves and allow you to indulge even further in the attractive and ever-changing scenery of Europe, whilst having even more time to relax, talk to friends and partners or even indulge in a good book.
Your Tour Manager will begin the journey with you in London, where you board the Eurostar service to mainland Europe to join your Danube river cruise. If you have any questions or concerns they are there to help, offering as much or as little guidance as you would like whilst away.
